Damage Localization in a Space Truss Model Using Modal Strain Energy

This paper mmmarirrs the experimental program, rhe modal fesl results, the exrrocred modal shapes and an m&is implemented to localize the damage via modal strain energy distribution. The modal kw results consist of lhe vibrational signatures due m df&enr damages on rhe s,ruc,ure. The exrracted modal results are impiernenred in a global damqe detecrion/eualuation theory bared on modal swain energy disrrihulion. The strain energy distributions due 10 the sraric shapes of the modes are compured before and ajkvrhe inflicted damage. The differences from the normalized SW& energy distributions are multiplied timer element weighr f a c t o r s proporlional fo the srrain energy distribulion ojrhe damaged .s~n~c~ure. The weighted modal SW& energy differences are lumped inro the connecting nodes of rhe elrmeni.~ io provide indicarions of the locution of the in&red damage. The iechniyur is able 10 locate the camp&e damage and rhe partial damuge, bur was no, able fo derect rhe GUI dmage.
